Teaching students to evaluate AI output

A core literacy: judging whether AI output is any good.

Students often assume confident text is correct. A central skill to teach is evaluation: checking AI output against reliable sources, testing its claims, spotting fabricated references, and noticing bias or missing context. This is the same critical reading you already teach, applied to a new source.

Make it explicit and practice it. Have students fact-check a passage the tool produced, find where it went wrong, and explain how they know. The lesson that lands is that AI output is a draft to be verified by a knowledgeable human, which is both good information literacy and a healthy stance toward the tool for the rest of their lives.
