Designing AI-integrated assignments

Assignments where using AI well is the skill being taught.

An AI-integrated assignment makes the tool part of the task and assesses how well students use it. For example, students generate a first draft or a set of options with AI, then critique it, correct its errors, improve it, and document what they changed and why. The grade rests on their judgment: what they caught, what they added, how they reasoned.

These assignments teach a real and increasingly expected skill, working with AI critically rather than passively. They also make passive copying pointless, because the assessed work is precisely the human direction and evaluation that a tool cannot supply for itself. Be explicit that the thinking, not the generation, is what earns the grade.
