Disclosure and citation

Set a clear, simple norm for acknowledging AI use.

If you allow AI use, make disclosing it normal and low-stakes. A simple statement of how a tool was used, for example for brainstorming, for editing, or for generating a draft the student then revised, keeps everyone honest and teaches transparency. Hidden use thrives where disclosure is punished, so reward the honesty.

Point students to a citation or acknowledgment approach. Major style guides now offer guidance on citing or acknowledging generative AI, and your campus may have a preferred format. The specific format matters less than the habit: students learn to be transparent about their tools and methods, which is exactly the scholarly value you want them to carry forward.
