Integrity by design

A quality course designs for integrity rather than relying on policing.

Academic integrity is a quality dimension too, and the strongest approach is design rather than surveillance. A quality course lowers the pressure and opportunity for misconduct: it stages large assignments, connects work to specific course context, and varies tasks across terms. It also states integrity expectations clearly, since students follow rules they understand.

When reviewing for integrity, look at whether your high-stakes assessments invite shortcuts and whether your expectations are explicit. For the specific case of AI, the AI literacy course develops this redesign approach in depth. A course that builds in integrity is both higher quality and less stressful to run.
