A clear overview and starting point
A quality course tells students clearly where to begin and how it works.
One of the strongest predictors of a course feeling high-quality is a clear start. Students should be able to tell, immediately, where to begin, what to do first, and how the course works. A course overview or a getting-started area that orients them, what the course is about, how it is structured, and what to do in week one, removes the confusion that otherwise sets a poor tone.
Modality note
Where students get oriented differs by modality.
OnlineOnline, a getting-started module or a clear home page is essential, since there is no instructor in the room to point the way. Quality frameworks weight this heavily.
In-person / synchronousIn person, your first day and syllabus do much of this work, though a clear course site still helps students who miss class.
