Reach a range of students
Design so students with different preparation and circumstances can all learn.
Any class holds students with different preparation, backgrounds, and life circumstances. Some work jobs, some care for family, some are new to the subject while others are experienced. Effective teaching plans for that range rather than for an imaginary average student.
Practical moves help everyone. Use examples drawn from a variety of contexts so more students see the relevance. Offer more than one way to engage and to demonstrate learning, in the spirit of UDL. Be flexible where you can without compromising outcomes, since a small change in format or timing often makes the difference between a capable student succeeding or stalling. The goal is a course where success depends on learning and as many students as possible can get there.
