Routines and the physical room
Predictable routines and a deliberate room reduce friction all term.
Routines lower the cost of running a class. A predictable opening, a clear signal for getting attention back after group work, and a consistent way of ending all reduce friction and free your attention for teaching. Students relax into a class whose rhythm they can predict.
The room itself is a tool. Where you stand, how seats are arranged, and how you move all shape attention and participation. Moving around the room keeps students engaged and lets you notice what is happening. If you can arrange seating for discussion or group work, do so. A deliberate setup does quiet work all term.
