Set the climate and expectations

How you start shapes how the term runs, so set the tone on day one.

A well-run classroom is mostly built in the first week. On day one, state plainly how the class will work: how to participate, how you will run discussion, how to reach you, and what respectful engagement looks like. Saying these things aloud, and putting them in the syllabus, removes the guesswork that leads to problems later.

Set a tone that is warm and businesslike at once. Students settle into a class that feels purposeful and fair. Establish that you expect everyone to be able to think and speak without being talked over or put down. The climate you set early is the one you will live with, so set it on purpose rather than letting it form by accident.
