Redesign over detection

The thesis of this course: change the work, not the surveillance.

The throughline of this course is simple to state. You cannot reliably detect AI use, and trying to do so harms students and your teaching. What you can do is design assignments and assessments where AI is either not a shortcut around the learning or is brought in openly and deliberately.

Redesign protects integrity by making the work authentic and the process visible. It protects students by removing the need to accuse anyone. And it usually improves the assignment for its own sake, because the same moves that resist outsourcing, real context, visible thinking, and staged work, also make for better learning. The next lessons turn this principle into concrete assignment and assessment design.
