The privacy rule for your own use

One firm line: keep student data out of public tools.

The convenience of AI makes it easy to paste in a student’s essay for feedback or a roster for sorting. Do not. Public AI tools may store and reuse what you enter, and student records are protected under FERPA. Entering identifiable student work, grades, or information into a public tool can violate that protection.

If you want AI help with something involving student material, remove names and identifying details first, or use only a tool your institution has approved and contracted for that purpose. The simple rule to carry is to treat the input box as public. If you would not post it publicly, do not paste it into a public AI tool.

Accessibility note

Protecting student data is both a legal duty under FERPA and a matter of basic respect for the people in your class.
