Add gradebook items, including work done outside the LMS

Create the columns your course needs, including for in-person and offline work.

Most gradebook items appear automatically when you create an assignment, test, or graded discussion. For work you score outside Blackboard, such as an in-class presentation or a paper handed in on paper, manually add a gradebook item. Blackboard also supports collecting submissions offline: you create the item and then enter the attempt and grade yourself.

One setup decision worth knowing now: when you do grade, Blackboard lets you leave feedback as written comments or as audio or video recordings. You do not have to choose a format while building, but it helps to know the options exist as you plan your assessments.

How to do this in Blackboard

Official step-by-step instructions. Each opens in a new tab so you don’t lose your place in the course.

Offering feedback in written, audio, or video form gives students more than one way to take it in, which helps a range of learners.
