Alternative and authentic assessments
Sometimes the best response to AI is a different kind of evidence.
Not every outcome is best measured by a take-home essay. Consider alternatives that ask students to demonstrate learning in ways a generated document cannot stand in for: a short oral defense or conversation about their work, an in-class application or problem, a presentation, a portfolio with annotation, or a performance task tied to your field.
The goal is alignment. If the real outcome is that students can reason on their feet or apply a method, assess that directly. Using a mix of evidence across the term also lets you triangulate, so no single format carries all the weight, and a student’s genuine understanding shows up somewhere it cannot be outsourced.
