Communicate and model expectations

A policy only works if students understand and trust it.

Putting a policy in the syllabus is the start, not the end. Talk through it early, explain the reasoning, and connect it to what students are here to learn rather than to a threat. Students follow rules they understand and believe are fair more readily than rules imposed by suspicion.

Revisit it as assignments come up, since the right move differs by task. And model the transparency you ask of them: if you used AI to draft a study guide or a set of practice questions, say so. When you treat AI use as a normal thing to be open about, students are far more likely to be open too.
