Conclusion
This course has provided the basics of web accessibility. This is not everything that needs to be considered for a full WCAG 2.0 AA review, but it’s a good start, and it has covered the majority of the challenges that users will face as they create content within a content management system.
More complete training is available through Wichita State University’s Badge program.
Automatic Web Accessibility Checkers
There are a handful of good accessibility checkers that are available online — simply go to the web page of the checker, paste in the URL of the page that you would like to have checked, and review the report.
A similar checker is built into Wichita State University’s main web site Content Management System, so if you’re using those tools, you have access to that sort of report every time you publish a page.
It’s important to understand that these sorts of checks are limited. They can look for alt text, but they can’t decide if what appears in the alt text field is appropriate to the image or the context. They can look for header structure, but can’t determine if something that isn’t created as a header should be. They can identify the use of color, but can’t tell if that color is the only way that meaning is being delivered.
So, it’s important to keep these ideas and guidelines in mind as you create and edit your pages. It’s often very useful to start off with an automated check, but there is no substitute for making an evaluation yourself.
